MANTECA HISTORY
Post Office plans city mail delivery within Manteca in 1949
In the weeks since the town was incorporated, city marshal Maro Litchfield has offered his resignation. It was too small a salary for him to remain in the position and he resigned. It was announced that F. M. Roundtree would be taking over the position from Mayor Joshua Cowell.
All plans are complete for this evening's joint dinner meeting of the chamber of commerce and Lions Club to be held at Hotel Manteca at 7:00 p.m. L. M. Morris of Modesto will be the primary speaker for the evening, presided over by Dr. A. J. Whitaker, president of the Lions Club.
As the Manteca Chamber of Commerce's president for the past year, A. H. Veith handed over the gavel to his successor, F. Y. Kraft, at the monthly meeting last Thursday at the Hotel Manteca. As he bid farewell to his board of directors and members, the outgoing president wished their successor the same loyalty and cooperation that he had received during the past year.
It is not yet approved by the postal authorities that Manteca be given city mail delivery service. However, an inspector has recommended it to the department. It can only be established when the department advises Postmaster J. M. Luck to do so.
The Board of Trustees debated Monday night how to deal with the influx of new students in the elementary schools. The superintendent, Neil Hafley, believes that another new school will be needed soon. According to him, he can get along without double sessions for one more year, but afterward, more classrooms are needed.
MRPS Hall was host to the Jaycees 21 distinguished awards banquet on Saturday night, which honored two of the highest honors a community can give its citizens. It is with great pleasure that I recognize John Gatto, the local manager of Bank of America, as the Man of the Year. As Outstanding Young Man of the Year, Duane Martin, a lawyer at McFall, Burnett and Martin, was named.
A resounding success by its sponsors, the John McFall Recognition Dinner, which drew 780 friends and supporters to St. Anthonys Parish Hall Saturday night, had all the overtones and some of the campaign rhetoric of the old fashioned Democratic rally. People who might have expected McFall's homecoming and first public appearance since his defeat on November 7 by now-Congressman Norman Shumway to be unhappy were mistaken.
In order to make Highway 120 bypass safer, not only elected officials, but the general public must work together and support this project. It was the consensus of elected officials, business owners, and local residents gathered at Carls Jr. restaurant in Manteca to discuss ideas for securing more state funding for bypass improvements. It was organized by Mayor Jack Snyder.
The double-edged sword of class size reduction and residential growth has become a double-edged sword for Manteca Unified School District. Although more portables have been added, elementary schools are losing blacktop space and playing fields as available spots aren't being utilized. The board unanimously approved a request from the district Tuesday for 12 portable classrooms for undetermined elementary sites.
California is going from a blue state to a dry state due to near-record high temperatures in January. It appears to be the driest January ever on the critical Sierra watershed. That's worrying water managers like Jeff Shields of South San Joaquin Irrigation District.
